Because no one is unadoptable

You Gotta Believe exists to deliver on the promise made to youth in foster care: that they will leave with a family.

You Gotta Believe is one of a precious few organizations in the U.S and the only organization in the New York City Metro area that limits its practice to finding permanent parents and families for young adults, teens, and pre-teens in the foster care system.

Today, more than 400,000 children are in foster care in the US, and every year, as many as 25,000 of them will age out of the foster care system. In NYC alone, more than 1,000 young people will age out of foster care this year.

What happens to these young people?

A young person who ages out of care does so without the one thing they were promised when they entered foster care–a permanent parent to support them and guide them through life.

As many as 50% of youth aging out of foster care will become homelessness; many will be incarcerated or hospitalized and experience health and mental health challenges throughout their lives, and only a tiny percent will have a college degree by age 26. These outcomes are completely unacceptable and are the reason that YGB was founded.

Our Philosophy:

YGB envisions a day when no child is asked to face adulthood alone, when every child aging out of foster care is connected to an unconditionally committed, loving permanent family.

  • We believe that no child, teen or young adult is unadoptable and that every young person has the right to the permanent and unconditional support of a lifetime parent.

  • We believe that nothing about a child, including “negative behavior” has anything to do with their need or right to a family.

  • We base our work on the unwavering conviction that a permanent family is a realistic possibility for all teens – no matter their age – in foster care.

  • We support all youth including those from “broken adoptions”, LGBTQ youth, youth with babies, to connect with loving families.

  • We specialize in working with youth age 10 and up, because for them, adoption is no longer even an identified goal, and we especially focus on older teens (16-21) close to aging out of care.

  • We welcome all capable families and individuals who would like to provide a permanent and loving home for our city’s youth and young adults.

  • We welcome singles and couples, regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression; physical characteristics, marital or domestic partnership status, medical or disability status.

  • We know that “it is never too late for family” and that the power of the unconditional commitment of a loving family transforms young people’s prospects of living long, happy, healthy lives.

Join us as a possible parent (you can do it!), a young person seeking family, or as a believer that it’s never too late for family!
